The Sur Thing!

Driving down the highway we past the town of Sur. Sur is a fishing town on the east coast of Oman. Sur was once a main center of trading with East Africa and built many dhows to support trading. The dhow's are still being built to this day.

A dhow is primarly used to carry heavy items. It takes a lot of hard work to build a dhow. The teak or mahogany wood comes from Pakistan, which is very strong and doesn't let in water. It takes about 150-200 men over a year to build a 130 foot dhow. Larger dhows usually have crews around 30 people while smaller dhows usually have around 12 deckhands.
