driving to the souk

There are so many unusual things to see when driving in Muscat. On the way to Muttrah/Mattrah/Mutrah (all English spellings on signs for the same place because there is no mandated translation. They use phonetics to translate). This is a giant 'incense burner' built on top of a mountain.
There are many picturesque
statues along the walkway
on the main strip of the souk.

Before we walked to the souk we discovered stairs. I smell adventure.

A view from the fort.

Muttrah Fort is along the Muttrah Corniche, a short walk from Muttrah Souk. Love seeing the many, many watch towers built on top of the mountains.

The traditional Arabic market place is called the souk and these are found in many of the towns throughout the Sultanate. One of the oldest preserved souks in Oman is in Muttrah. Gold and silver jewellery is found in abundance as well as numerous wooden carvings, ornaments and spices. I saw some beautiful camel bone picture frames. The maze of pathways with their wooded roofs leads throughout the souk with hundreds of shops mostly for 'household' goods : spices, fabric, clothes and silver khanjars (an traditional Omani dagger). Just browsing you may get lucky and find a great deal. I found bargaining is a must, especially when there is a tourist boat docked in harbor. They will quote you 6 Omani Rial that you were told was 3 the week before.
